Dear friends,
This month marks one year since Donald Trump returned to office. For immigrant communities, this past year has brought fear, instability, and renewed attacks on dignity and due process. We have seen aggressive enforcement policies, expanded detention, the erosion of humanitarian protections, and a political narrative that treats immigrants as disposable rather than as neighbors, parents, workers, and children.
For many of the families we serve, the first year of this administration has meant sleepless nights, rushed safety plans, and children asking questions no child should have to ask. It has meant parents weighing whether seeking help could put their families at risk. It has meant the constant hum of uncertainty layered on top of an already unjust immigration system. And yet, it has also meant something else.
It has meant community showing up.
At Contigo Immigrant Justice, our phones have not stopped ringing. Families across New Mexico continue to seek legal protection, clarity, and hope. Our legal team has worked relentlessly to defend asylum seekers, survivors of violence, longtime community members, and mixed-status families who simply want to remain together and safe. Legal representation remains one of the strongest defenses against detention and deportation, and in this moment, it is more critical than ever.
We are honest about the reality we are facing. The road ahead is difficult. Federal policies are causing real harm, and the consequences are not abstract. They are felt in homes, classrooms, workplaces, and courtrooms across our state.
But we are equally clear about this truth: we are not powerless.
Every case we take on, every family we support, and every right we defend is an act of resistance rooted in care. Every person who chooses to stand with immigrant families helps build a future grounded in dignity rather than fear.
If the first year of this administration has shown us anything, it is that our work matters deeply. It matters because immigrants belong here. It matters because families deserve to stay together. It matters because justice is not self-executing. It is built by people who refuse to look away.
Thank you for being part of this community. Thank you for choosing solidarity, courage, and care in a moment that demands all three. We will continue to show up, fight back with love and skill, and walk alongside immigrant families no matter who is in power.
With gratitude and determination,
Contigo Immigrant Justice
