Dear Friends,

As 2026 begins, I’d like to wish you the very best for the year ahead on behalf of the entire Reporters Without Borders (RSF) team.

The past year has shown us just how fragile press freedom is and how violently it’s being attacked around the world. In 2025, more than fifty percent of the global population were living in a country where press freedom is seriously threatened, according to our World Press Freedom Index.

In these trying times, your solidarity has been more vital than ever. Thanks to your generosity, we achieved major milestones and were able to continue tirelessly defending press freedom and protecting journalists in danger. Because of you, we’re able to make sure the voices of these news professionals are heard in a world where reliable information is under threat.

As the new year rolls in, RSF is more committed than ever to defending your right to honest, independent journalism.

You are at the very heart of our mission, and your support is an act of trust, solidarity and resistance.

Despite the major challenges ahead — from journalists targeted in war zones to financial pressure on newsrooms worldwide — we’re still as determined as ever. In 2026, we will continue to scale up our projects and strengthen our impact, and we know we can count on you to help us tackle these urgent issues.

We’ll continue to work tirelessly for the release of journalists who are unjustly thrown behind bars, such as Christophe Gleizes, Frenchie Mae Cumpio and Sevinj Vagifgizi, to name just three of the 503 counted in December 2025. We will also move forward with our key priority campaigns: defending access to reliable information in the United States, safeguarding media pluralism and independence in France, and protecting environmental journalism – which is key for understanding the climate crisis and its consequences.

Thank you, from the bottom of my heart, for your unwavering support. Knowing that you are by our side inspires and motivates us every single day.

With my deepest gratitude,

Thibaut Bruttin, Reporters Without Borders (RSF) Director General
