Today, I joined over 100 of my colleagues in the House of Representatives in co-sponsoring articles of impeachment against Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem.
I want you to know this is not an action I take lightly, nor is it a piece of political theater.
It is a last resort after Secretary Noem ignored my repeated calls to open investigations into the killing of Renee Nicole Good in Minneapolis and the death of Nenko Gantchev, a detainee at the North Lake Processing Center in Baldwin, Michigan.
Since she has given no indication of resigning for her repeated failures and abuses of power, I am left with no choice but to join my colleagues in calling for her impeachment and prompt removal from office.
Over the past year, Secretary Noem’s leadership has been reckless, chaotic, and corrupt. In her rush to meet Donald Trump's mass deportation quotas, she has deployed ICE within our communities without consulting local officials, resulting in fear, confusion, unnecessary violence, and several deaths.
Secretary Noem is not merely failing to do her job as head of the Department of Homeland Security; under her purview, our country is less safe, and it’s time for some real accountability.
Of course, I'm clearheaded about the fact that Republicans are currently in control of the House and Senate and extremely unlikely to cross party lines to vote yes on Kristi Noem's impeachment. I know we're fighting an uphill battle here, but it's one we must keep fighting.
That's why I'm putting everything I have into winning this Senate race. Because if we can keep Michigan blue and take back the Senate majority for Democrats, we will have a real chance at standing up to Trump and corrupt Cabinet members like Kristi Noem.
In tough moments like this, I refuse to get discouraged. Instead, I'm more motivated than ever – because I know that together, we can and will create the change our state and our country so desperately need.
