Today should mark the 53rd anniversary of Roe v. Wade. However, this 1973 landmark decision, which protected abortion access for Americans nationwide, was overturned in 2022. Since then, GOP politicians have worked tirelessly to restrict our rights.
Last year, Republicans in Ohio tried to undermine the will of voters by pushing new legislation to restrict abortion access, despite Ohioans showing up to enshrine their freedoms in the state constitution the year prior. They made clear attempts to try to test the legal limits of the amendment in continued efforts to chip away at the reproductive freedoms that Ohioans overwhelmingly voted to protect.
On the federal level, we are facing similar threats. Trump, with the blessing of Republicans in Congress, has taken major steps to attack abortion access, including by stripping away Medicaid funding for clinics, preventing veterans on VA health insurance from having abortions – with no exceptions, weakening data privacy rules protecting abortion patients, and more.
We must stay vigilant. With the Republican trifecta in Washington, all reproductive care, from abortion to birth control, is under threat. It’s critical that we work together to protect our rights.
