Just five years ago, abortion was legal in Iowa. Now, on Roe v. Wade’s 53rd anniversary, that is no longer the case.

Governor Reynolds and her anti-choice acolytes had been trying to ban abortion in Iowa since 2018 to no avail. But they finally had success when the Supreme Court overturned Roe in 2022. Reynolds then called for a rare special legislative session to pass an abortion ban in 2023.

Despite legal action, the Iowa Supreme Court upheld the ban in 2024, and as of right now in 2026, abortion is banned after six weeks of pregnancy — long before most women even know they’re pregnant.

Let me be clear: Kim Reynolds and Republican lawmakers' archaic abortion ban is outright dangerous.

Years of attacks on reproductive freedom have caused Iowa to have the lowest number of OB-GYN’s per capita, and more physicians are moving out of our state. Studies show that insufficient maternity care is linked to low birthweight and significantly increased infant and maternal mortality. When our health care premiums and problems are skyrocketing, Iowans are left alone to fend for themselves.

Republicans have gotten our state into this mess, and it’s time we elect real leaders to help get us out. Will you chip in $15 to IDP today to help us replace Reynolds this year with a Democratic governor who will protect our reproductive rights?
