53 years ago, the Supreme Court issued its landmark decision in Roe v. Wade, which protected the fundamental right to privacy and to choose across the country.
But in 2022, the Court overturned this decision and, since then, states have enacted extreme restrictions and even complete bans on reproductive care. Here in Maryland, we responded quickly to the situation and continued to stand with women, particularly low-income women who rely on Medicaid and were impacted by the decision. In 2023, I voted on the Board of Public Works to purchase nearly three years’ worth of Mifepristone so women who needed them could have safe medical abortions.
When Roe v. Wade was on the line, I also rose to the podium in the Maryland General Assembly to share my story because I needed to let women in Maryland, and in our country, know that they are not alone in dealing with the aftermath of the Court’s decision.
I’ve always believed that true freedom cannot exist where anyone is denied autonomy over their own body. No one should have to risk their lives because their state laws forbid them from obtaining a life-saving abortion and urgent care.
Together, we must continue to advocate for women in states with extreme restrictions and complete bans. We must continue to defend and advocate for their health, safety, and fundamental right to make choices about their bodies.
Every woman, regardless of background or income, deserves control over her story and her future.
My very best,
Brooke
