Rehire America

What to Know: Economists say the “real unemployment rate” is 21 percent.

The TPPF Take: TPPF’s Rehire America Workplace Recovery Act could help revive the U.S. economy and get Americans producing and prospering again.

“Our proposed legislation targets government spending to businesses affected by the pandemic-driven shutdowns,” says Charles Beauchamp in TPPF's latest paper. “Specifically, it seeks to provide stability to the operating cash flow of these businesses by reimbursing them for their cash losses, and in doing so, it creates the confidence needed for these businesses to retain and rehire their current and former employees.”

Looming Deficit

What to Know: Texas faces a $4.6 billion deficit, the state comptroller projects.

The TPPF Take: It’s time for the state to tighten its belt, as Texas families are forced to do.

“Fortunately, state leaders have already asked some agencies to find 5% savings to cover part of this shortfall, and we recommend that every agency use all efforts, including zero-based budgeting to find additional savings of up to 15% by cutting wasteful and unnecessary spending,” says TPPF’s Vance Ginn. “By safely reopening Texas and getting people back to work and students in schools, the state will be best positioned to deal with any tax receipts shortfall while providing the best opportunities for Texans to flourish.”

Keeping Costs Down

What to Know: Simple things like price transparency and competition can help keep health care prices down, experts say.

The TPPF Take: TPPF has developed a helpful health care shopping list for consumers (meaning all of us).

“Government run health care in the United States has resulted in high costs, low quality, and poor outcomes for patients,” says TPPF’s David Balat. “That’s why price transparency is so important—it leads to ‘shoppable’ health care that empowers the patients to choose the most affordable, high quality options that fit their needs. We’ve compiled a list of resources which enable you to take advantage of price transparency and the free market to find health care options.”
