Dear Friends and Comrades,
Reflecting on the past year, we can take pride in the triumph of candidates around the country like Mayor Zohran Mamdani in New York City. But also in our own DSA endorsed candidates here in Santa Fe like City Councilor Pat Feghali, and Paul Bustamante whose strong second place finish has given them an opportunity to still become the City Councilor of District 2. We have built a robust and vibrant mutual aid effort driven by the passion and hard work of so many members in the Burrito Brigade. Thanks to the efforts of the Socialists in Office Committee and the Public Lands Committee, our county commission has taken a step towards bringing publicly owned power to our community. And through the efforts of the Housing Working Group, our chapter has developed and adopted a comprehensive platform to take on the local housing crisis.
Now in this new year of 2026, we face the troubling trends of increasingly aggressive imperialism abroad and fascism at home, while the contradictions of capitalism expand alongside its inequities. In the face of these things, may we choose daily to have courage and determination. May we go into this new year with the confidence that our greatest opportunities for growth and success are still ahead of us. May we rise to meet our moment in history and build a better world from the chaos and wreckage. We can hope for all of these things, but whether they come true is in the hands of each and everyone of us. May we find strength and comradery in this year’s work to be done.

District 2 Appointment
The inauguration of Michael Garcia as Santa Fe's newest mayor leaves a critical vacancy on the city council. In accordance with the Santa Fe Municipal Charter, the mayor must appoint a qualified candidate from that district for the remainder of the term. Fellow DSA member and comrade, Paul Bustamante, submitted his application for consideration, and we are encouraging everyone to contact the mayor's office and express their support for Paul's appointment as the next District 2 city councilor!
Please send your thoughts about appointing Paul as the new councilor for District 2 to Mayor Garcia at [email protected]. You can cut and paste the script below, or adapt it to your own words. If you live in District 2, please make sure to state that.

Dear Mayor Garcia,
Congratulations on your election.
I am a Santa Fe resident writing today to let you know of my support for the appointment of Paul Bustamante to fill the vacant seat in District 2, which you held until your election.
I believe Paul will make a great representative for the district, and the voters of the district agree with me on this assessment, as 46% of them voted for Paul in the 2025 election that Ms. Barrett won with 54% of the vote. Over 3,000 District 2 voters gave their vote to Mr. Bustamante already. He was a close second runner, and deserves to represent his district alongside Ms. Barrett, in accordance with the will of the voters. I trust you will take this into consideration as you make your decision.
Thank you so much for your consideration, and best of luck with you in your new role serving our city.
Respectfully,
YOUR NAME
YOUR DISTRICT (especially if you are in D2)
Burrito Brigade
Burrito Brigade continues to grow, pursuing ongoing and new projects. People who would like to be involved are invited to join the discord and find a place to plug in. Burrito Brigade rolled 320 burritos on Saturday to feed both our neighbors and the YUCCA training! At the We’ve Got US Rally, Burrito Brigade handed out car kits to help get more health, survival supplies and tons of hand warmers to our unhoused neighbors.
Reading Group
The next Reading Group meeting is on February 1st and will be reading Prisoners of the American Dream by MIke Davis. Email [email protected] for details.
