Tell The Trump Administration: We Need Cleaner Cars And Trucks That Save Us Money At Trump’s urging, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is trying to gut critical fuel-economy standards for cars and trucks that save drivers money — hundreds of dollars each year — AND protect our health and the planet. This is yet another example of the Trump administration sacrificing the well-being of everyday people to line the pockets of Big Oil. Tell the Trump administration: we need cleaner, affordable cars and trucks!

Gutting fuel-economy standards for vehicles will hit our health, our wallets, and the planet — hard.

Right now, Trump’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is trying to gut critical fuel-economy standards that reduce emissions from cars and trucks. Eliminating these standards will harm people’s health and worsen the climate crisis, all while making everyday necessities more expensive — at a time when working families are already struggling to make ends meet.

The transportation sector is already the largest source of carbon emissions in the United States — we can’t let this administration gut the protections we DO have. Carbon emissions worsen climate change and fuel costly, damaging weather events like wildfires, hurricanes, and extreme heat that put our lives and homes at risk.

Toxic air pollution caused by cars and trucks cuts short tens of thousands of people’s lives every year. This pollution leads to respiratory disease and triggers asthma, which affects people living near highways, ports, freight hubs, and other high-traffic areas at the highest rates — disproportionately harming people in low-income communities and communities of color.

In addition to the health impacts, the current fuel-economy standards make it cheaper to own and operate a car — plain and simple. Reduced transportation costs are essential for people who depend on affordable cars to get to work or school, care for others, and go about the activities of their daily lives.

Clean air and affordable transportation are basic necessities we all need and deserve, regardless of income or zip code.
