Friends, can you imagine if House Republicans used their majority to pass some major, impactful legislation to make health care more affordable, lower grocery costs, and hold Donald Trump accountable?
I wish I were writing to tell you they’d done just that. Here’s the legislation they actually passed: “the SHOWER Act.”
It adopts new water pressure standards for showerheads.
At a moment when families are being crushed by high costs, when our freedoms are under attack, when Donald Trump is openly destroying our democracy — this is what House Republicans are spending their time on.
It would be laughable if it weren’t such a clear example of just how fundamentally incapable this Republican majority is of governing. They either don’t care about the problems facing people across this country, or they simply lack the backbone to stand up and do something about it all.
It’s hard to say which is worse.
This week we also mark the first full year of Trump 2.0.
As we reflect on what the past year has brought, and all that might lie ahead — in the Oval Office, in the House of Representatives, and in our communities — I understand the impulse to retreat. To be paralyzed by fear, unsure of how best to fight back, or just exhausted by the prospect.
I won’t tell you to buck up. I will tell you this:
I’m not paralyzed by fear, and I’m not exhausted. I’m ready to fight back, and I’m ready to win.
I’m incredibly grateful for the many, many people in San Diego, across California, and around the country who are stepping up to hold those in power accountable. Joining nonviolent protests, exercising your First Amendment rights, and standing up for your neighbors — thank you, truly.
At the same time, you shouldn’t have to do this alone. Your elected leaders should fight for you, and that’s exactly what I will keep doing. I will use every tool I have to defend your rights, lower your costs, and stand up to abuse of power — and I will work every day to make sure we’re ready to flip the House this November, so we can do all that and more.
Thank you for reading and for being a part of this team.
Warmly,
Sara
