Tomorrow marks the 53rd anniversary of the U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling in Roe v. Wade. While the 1973 decision established a constitutional right to abortion, it never guaranteed meaningful access to care.

Even at its strongest, Roe left too many people behind. States were allowed to restrict care, stigmatize patients, and deny access based on income, race, immigration status, sexual orientation, and zip code. For millions of people, abortion was legal in name only.

This moment calls for honesty and courage. We don’t need to restore a system that was never built to serve everyone. We need to fight for something better.

At NIRH, we are building towards a future where abortion care is guaranteed, accessible, affordable, and free from government interference — a future where everyone, no matter where they live, how much they make, or who they are, can make decisions about their own body with dignity and safety.

Across the country, we’re building that future right now:

- In Minnesota, we’re collaborating with the state’s abortion fund, Our Justice, to address financial and logistical barriers to care by calling on the state to strengthen insurance coverage and establish the Reproductive Health Equity Fund to support patients and providers.

- In California, we’ve partnered with the California Abortion Alliance (CAA) to expand access to abortion care and support providers, abortion funds, and partners navigating persistent coverage gaps and inadequate reimbursement rates.

- In Virginia, we’re working with Whole Woman’s Health Alliance to advance policy solutions that expand coverage, organizing key stakeholders and communities in support of expanding reproductive health care access.

Roe was always the floor — not the finish line. And we are done accepting the bare minimum.
