Friend,
For much of our nation’s history, HBCUs have played a critical role in providing our most exceptional students with a quality education. Today, this legacy is carried on by the 37 member HBCUs supported directly by UNCF as they provide a first-rate education and a unique learning environment.
But a student’s path to an HBCU is not always a straightforward one. Financial barriers, bias, poor representation of HBCUs and a lack of diversity in our schools often leave K-12 students feeling like an HBCU education is not an option.
K-12 parents are integral stakeholders in the education landscape, and their influence shapes their students’ path to success. Our students thrive best when parents are informed and prepared to guide them, so we’re asking: Will you please sign our pledge today to support K-12 students on their journey to attend an HBCU?

In our 2024 report Hear Us, Believe Us, we identified these and other key findings about Black parents and caregivers. They:
Greatly value the importance of higher education, but say that schools fall short in helping them understand the college process
Report higher college aspirations for their child and lower instances of child suspensions when there are more Black teachers at their child’s school
Are deeply concerned about the racial inequities in their schools
As individuals deeply engaged in the educational lives of our children, it’s key to identify the barriers to our students’ paths to an HBCU education. It’s also important that we work to address those barriers by advocating for more Black teachers, prioritizing support in our school budgets and fostering more opportunities for parent involvement.
We can advocate for the change that our students need to pursue their dreams—but that begins today by pledging to support them on their journey in every way we can.
Please, sign our pledge now and join us in supporting K-12 students as they pursue a college degree and build bright, successful futures.
