Hi John,

When it comes to climate injustices, the transport of fracked gas, as LNG, is near the top of my list. It allows countries who don’t want fracking in their own backyard to import fracked gas from elsewhere. And a blind eye is turned to communities far away, on which fracking is imposed. I don’t want Ireland to be one of these countries.

I’m proud to say that the anti-fracking movement has made huge progress to block the importation of fracked gas into Ireland. In a huge win for campaigners, we were promised a policy statement against the importation of fracked gas in the Programme for Government.

But a promise is nothing without a policy behind it. And while we’re waiting for a Government policy, the company behind the notorious Shannon LNG project could re-apply for planning permission [1]. Our hard won victory against fracked LNG could be torn from our grasp. Can you imagine how terrible that would be? We’ve got to do all we can to reduce this risk.

Could you contact the Government party leaders now asking them to turn their promise into a policy?

I'll email the party leaders

We don’t have much time to act - we need the cabinet to sign off on an LNG policy statement before the summer break. This would give us the best chance of having a formal policy statement to stand over if any LNG infrastructure company makes a planning application. If hundreds of us contact the party leaders now it could be the final push they need to give this policy priority before the summer recess. Will you email the leaders of Fianna Fáil, Fine Gael and the Green Party now, to call for a formal policy statement ruling out LNG?

Time and time again, the fossil free movement in Ireland has taken on the fossil fuel industry and won. We’ve banned fracking in Ireland and divested our fossil fuel investments. Now we’re on the cusp of banning the import of fracked gas through LNG terminals. Working together, we can push for this promised Government LNG policy to be passed urgently. This would send a powerful signal to the companies behind the Shannon and Cork LNG projects that their planning applications are unlikely to bear fruit. It would also dissuade Predator LNG, who are planning a floating terminal just off the coast of Kinsale [2].

I'll email the leaders now

Working together, we can create an Ireland that is truly Frack Free.

Thanks for all you do.
