Council funding must be addressed
London Councils Chair Cllr Peter John OBE has welcomed the Housing, Communities and Local Government Select Committee's report on 'Local government finance and the 2019 Spending Review'. The MPs' report calls for the current uncertainty for local government and the lack of funding for services to be addressed as a matter of urgency.
“London local government has endured a 63 per cent reduction to core funding since 2010, while demand has risen and responsibilities have increased." said Cllr John.
"This situation is simply unsustainable, as the latest report from the HCLG select committee shows, and we look forward to working with MPs and central government to ensure local councils can deliver for their communities in the years ahead.”
Adult social care services in London have delivered almost half a billion pounds of efficiencies since 2015 and saved the NHS around £4.6 million a year through avoiding unnecessary hospital stays, new research from London Councils shows.
Commenting on the report, London Councils’ Executive Member for Health & Care, Cllr Ray Puddifoot, said: “Adult social care services are essential for meeting Londoners’ needs and supporting their wellbeing, but they’re also critical to the performance and sustainability of the NHS in the capital.
“Boroughs are proud of the excellent work carried out by adult social care services across the capital. However, the capital’s growing population means more and more Londoners need social care. It’s vital that services get the resources they need to cope with increasing levels of demand.”
Earlier this year the Leaders and Mayors of all 32 London boroughs and the City of London came together to jointly agree a set of 46 key pledges across seven policy areas to improve the lives of every Londoner by 2022.
