John,
I’ll just say it: the start to 2026 has been really difficult.
I know. I feel it too. It’s been tough to focus on anything but ICE’s abuse and violence in Minnesota, or Trump’s reckless attacks on Venezuela, threats against our allies in Greenland, refusal to release the full Epstein Files, or just plain mad king behavior.
It’s definitely hard to think about long-term big picture stuff, for our country and even for our own lives and families. Getting through every day is hard enough.
My head is spinning, and I'm sure yours is too. But then I remember: that’s exactly what Trump wants. And I shake myself out of it.
I’m hopeful I can help inspire you to do the same and shake yourself out of whatever spiral or stupor you may be finding yourself in right now. And honestly, John, I don’t blame you at all.
So I want to hear from you.
If you can, take a couple of minutes and let me know how you’re feeling and what’s on your mind in this moment. What are you thinking about right now? What issues are weighing on you most? Do you have a story to share? And yes, how are you feeling?
I can’t help but spend time reflecting on history lately. And it’s true, we find ourselves in a particularly pivotal, dramatic moment. But never forget: Americans have dealt with tyrants before. It’s our founding story. We’ll get through this the only way we know how, by being there for each other and fighting like hell for the things and people and principles that matter to us.
I look forward to hearing from you. Please, let me know how you’re feeling,
— Mary Gay
