NBC NEWS: Corporation for Public Broadcasting is officially shutting down months after GOP funding cuts

It was an honor to host Reading Rainbow for more than 20 years on PBS, which is why the recent news about the Corporation for Public Broadcasting shutdown is so heartbreaking for me. We need leaders who care!

That’s why I’m supporting my friend Mandela Barnes to be the next governor of Wisconsin.

We are at an inflection point in our country. We can choose if we are going to go down the path of extremism, or the one that respects sharing the truth, a strong education, and the arts.

The Corporation for Public Broadcasting has been the primary source of funding for programs like PBS and NPR. With this funding completely decimated, public broadcasting is under threat all across the United States.

This is a deliberate attempt to stop people all across the country from getting information about what is happening in their communities and in their government.

Protecting these services is absolutely vital. Hearing each other’s stories brings us together, fosters connection, and allows us to hold our leaders accountable. I know that as governor, Mandela is going to do just that.

We are facing some serious challenges as a country. There is nothing more important for the future of our country than ensuring future generations have the opportunity to learn and thrive.

I know that together, we will have the strength to tackle these challenges head on — but only if we take the opportunity to do so. That starts with helping Mandela Barnes share his vision for a Wisconsin where everyone can live up to their fullest potential.
