We knew that ICE has been racially profiling Latino, Somali-American, and Asian-American people in Minnesota.
But this is a new low for civil rights and American freedom.
In the video above, an ICE agent stops a man in Minneapolis and says to him: “Talking to you, hearing that you have an accent, I have reason to believe that you are not born of this country” and demands that the man now prove his citizenship on the spot.
The man with an “accent” is a US citizen, and has been for years. ICE detained him in front of his five-year-old child anyway, because their policy is to arrest first, check documents later.
Michael, here’s the beginning text of the Fourth Amendment of the US Constitution:
“The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated…”
Where you were born, what accent you have, the color of your skin; these are all things that are completely off limits for any other law enforcement to use as a basis for search and seizure. But ICE gets away with outright racial profiling and a suspension of civil rights, because MAGA-control in Washington has enabled them to throw out the rule of law and replace it with Trump’s agenda.
The fight against ICE is the civil rights struggle of our time. This isn’t about immigrants vs. citizens. This isn’t about criminals vs. the innocent. We are watching, in real-time, as ICE degrades the very values that form the bedrock of our country, and nobody is safe from their terror and brutality.
