“A year ago, a decent man left the White House.” That’s how Edwin Eisendrath described today, when Joe Biden stepped down and Donald Trump moved back into 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. And so began the “Age Of Monsters,” as Edwin calls it.
“Donald Trump formed a government dedicated to the proposition that everything is his,” Edwin declares, going through the laundry list of what the current president has destroyed during the first year of his second term. From institutions like the Department of Justice and the Centers for Disease Control to the goodwill and rules-based international order America once held on the global stage, it’s been a year of mourning.
Unfortunately, some Democratic leaders are just not made for the moment. As the threats to Greenland continue, Edwin slams lawmakers like Virginia U.S. Senator Mark Warner for asking questions like “When will this president understand …” and demands to know when they’ll get rid of him. He also slams Democrats who have been critical of ICE but are still willing to fund it for tepid concessions like more training.
What’s Edwin’s message for Democrats in Washington who have been slow to stand up to this administration, especially as Trump continues his warmongering over Greenland? “Grow up. This is a serious moment; this is not politics as usual. If you play politics as usual, then you’re going to go the way of Republicans because nobody wants that. … They don’t deserve to be in power if they’re willing to go along with this.”
Tell Congress: Stop ICE now
So, what can we do in order to fight back ever-creeping fascism a year into Trump 2.0? Edwin and Sam encourage citizens to respond the way the people of Minneapolis have as they’re under siege from ICE. We must never let what’s happening in our country be normalized.
