One year ago today, Donald Trump entered the White House with a Republican Congress and a Cabinet full of billionaires to do his bidding. Today is a solemn day as we reflect on all that the President and his allies have done over the last year—from rolling back progress on climate change to slashing funding for healthcare and food assistance to driving up costs and making life harder for so many hardworking people.
From day one of his second term, Donald Trump got to work pushing his ridiculous policies on Oregonians and the American people. He rammed through a trash budget bill that cut funding for Medicaid and SNAP while giving tax handouts to billionaires and huge corporations. He dismantled the Department of Education and shut down programs that help our kids succeed. He authorized the “full force” of the military against his own people, and sent the National Guard into Portland. He even targeted 56 Democrats and me after we stood up to him for sending his goons into our cities and for calling out his BS. Despite all of this, my Republican colleagues in Congress have done nothing to stop him. But I’m fighting back. I’m working to restore funding for Medicaid and SNAP, protect and expand public education, lower costs for hardworking families, and keep our communities safe. As we look ahead to the second year under this administration, I know there’s still a lot of work to be done to keep up this fight—and I’m ready to continue this work for Oregon and for our country.
