More than 20 years after its formation, the role of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and its agencies are under scrutiny, reports Hamed Aleaziz of The New York Times [link removed].
Created in 2002 to combat international terrorism, DHS is now the U.S. government’s largest law enforcement agency, with about 250,000 employees. Now, as agents increase operations in U.S. cities, local law enforcement leaders are among those concerned with tactics and militarized operations.
Seattle Police Chief Shon Barnes said last fall, "The biggest question that I’ve been receiving is: How will we intercede if there’s a conflict between community members and DHS? Who will we side with? What will we do?"
After the shooting death of Renée Good by an ICE agent in Minnesota, an array of new polls indicate that many American voters are reconsidering the role of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), report Patrick Marley, Yasmeen Abutaleb and Mariana Alfaro of The Washington Post [link removed].
The findings include surveys from CNN [link removed], CBS News [link removed], Quinnipiac University [link removed] and The Economist/YouGov [link removed]. Even before the shooting, the public’s confidence in ICE operations was waning as images, videos and stories of enforcement tactics spread, the trio report.
"We’ve seen a slow dripping downward of confidence in ICE [and] the person running it, and then Minneapolis happens," said Tim Malloy, a polling analyst with Quinnipiac.
