*DIFS & MDHHS Remind Michiganders: Health Insurance for No Cost Childhood Vaccines Will Continue Following CDC Schedule Changes*

(LANSING, MICH) — The Michigan Department of Insurance and Financial Services (DIFS) and the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) are advising Michiganders that, despite the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services announcing an updated childhood vaccine schedule, most health insurance plans will continue to cover childhood vaccines without cost-sharing.

“Health insurance coverage for childhood vaccines is an important way to protect every child’s future,” said* DIFS Director Anita Fox. *“Cost should not be a barrier to accessing childhood vaccines that prevent serious, and often life-threatening, diseases and DIFS stands ready to help consumers navigate their health insurance questions. Our live call center is available Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., at 877-999-6442.”

“Vaccines are one of the most effective tools we have to keep children healthy and communities safe,” said *MDHHS Director Elizabeth Hertel.* “The science behind childhood immunizations has not changed, and Michigan families should feel confident that they can continue to access MDHHS-recommended vaccines [ [link removed] ] without cost barriers. MDHHS remains committed to supporting families and health care providers in protecting children from serious, preventable diseases.”

Under the new federal guidance, all vaccines on the CDC’s vaccine schedule remain covered with no out-of-pocket cost by private insurance plans and federal coverage programs, such as Medicaid.

On Thursday, Dec. 18, [ [link removed] ] Michigan’s Chief Medical Executive Dr. Natasha Bagdasarian issued a Standing Recommendation [ [link removed] ]advising health care providers and families to follow the child and adolescent immunization schedule produced by the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) [ [link removed] ]or t [ [link removed] ]he American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP). [ [link removed] ]

The underlying scientific evidence remains unchanged and MDHHS continues to support the full AAP and AAFP vaccination schedules for children. Families should still be able to access the full range of childhood immunizations as recommended by the AAP and AAFP to protect their children from serious diseases.

Consumers with questions about health insurance coverage for vaccines should contact their insurance company. If they cannot get the information they need or have additional questions, they may contact DIFS for assistance from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday at 877-999-6442.
