Email from Organization Name Today, Donald Trump broke decades of tradition by refusing to issue a proclamation acknowledging MLK Jr. Day. John, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. is remembered as a champion for civil rights, but he was for more than that. Dr. King famously said: “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.” He believed the fight against racism, economic exploitation, and endless wars were bound together, and that you could not defeat one without confronting them all. That truth feels impossible to ignore at present. Today, our campaign honored MLK’s legacy of service by teaming up with Chi-care to hand out jackets and hot meals for our neighbours. And while we were on the ground serving people, the White House broke decades of presidential tradition and said nothing. No proclamation. No words. Just silence. Trump refused to honor MLK Jr. because his agenda is everything Dr. King stood against. An ICE regime that racially profiles, arrests, and detains people for the color of their skin. Attacks on workers’ right to organize. An economy rigged for billionaires and corporations, where fraud and exploitation of working people are not punished, but rewarded. And an escalation of U.S. imperialism abroad, threatening yet more endless foreign wars. The fight ahead of us is immense. But Dr. King never promised us comfort. He called us to courage. By following in the footsteps of Dr. King, we can defeat Trump’s fascism and move toward a more just, equitable, and peaceful future. That is what I will do in Congress. I will fight for my neighbors under attack by ICE’s racist brutality. I will bring this administration to justice for their crimes. I will strengthen workers’ rights and end endless foreign wars. But I need your help to get there first. The same enemies of peace are circling this race like vultures. Corporations. Foreign special interests. War profiteers. They are trying to anoint their chosen candidate and block the people of Illinois’ 9th District from having a true champion for justice and progress. Dr. King legacy shows us that organized people can defeat organized money. So today, in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., I’m asking: will you make a contribution of $25, $15, or whatever is meaningful to you to help take this movement from the streets of Chicago to the halls of Congress?
