With the ongoing protests and riots in Minneapolis at the top of the news, it is important to remember why operations to arrest illegal immigrants are happening at such a heightened and visual pace.
Not only is the Trump administration pressuring illegal aliens in the United States to leave on their own accord, thus saving taxpayer money in the process, but it is to deter people in other parts of the world from even attempting the journey.
This trend was highlighted in a recent article from the BBC. While the main focus was how Hondurans who are in the United States illegally are sending more money back to their families before they are deported, the BBC interviewed one man who said the operations have made him stay put in Tegucigalpa, the country’s capital.
“But I see what Trump is doing, and it’s made me think twice,” Elías Padilla admitted to the BBC, saying the plan was to send remittances once he found work in the United States.

Now before any Trump supporter gets too excited about this news, Padilla went on to say that Trump’s policies have only put his plans on hold, not cancelled.

This highlights that while closing the southern border to illegal immigration has been one of the most successful aspects to Trump’s presidency, it can be a short-term victory since many of his immigration policies have not been sealed into law. The extra funding for the Department of Homeland Security is set for a few years, but if nothing else is codified, then a potential Democrat president can very easily undo the gains Trump has made.
As I saw during the Biden-Harris border crisis, it did not matter if illegal immigrants walked up to one of the gates within the border wall. Due to the open border policies of the Biden administration, Border Patrol agents were forced to open the gates to let people through to be processed and released.
The Biden-Harris border crisis showed people across the world that if they are willing to wait another couple of years, then the border will be opened once again. Padilla is far from the only person in Latin America, or the world for that matter, who is playing the long game. It will be up to voters in the next elections if they want to continue or destroy the historic progress that has been made.
