One of his most enduring hopes was that people not be judged “by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.” Dr. King's leadership against racial discrimination brought about lasting legislative reforms in the United States. In 1983, President Ronald Reagan signed Martin Luther King Jr. Day into law. This holiday is also designated as a national Day of Service, one of only two federal holidays with this distinction. Dr. King believed that progress depends on everyday citizens taking responsibility for their communities. Volunteering our time is one way to honor his legacy today, through action.
