I hope you’ll join me in honoring Dr. King’s legacy.
“A nation that continues year after year to spend more money on military defense than on programs of social uplift is approaching spiritual death”
— Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
John,
Today we honor the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
Not the palatable revised version of Dr. King but the Dr. King who challenged injustice wherever it showed up.
The Dr. King who named racism, militarism, and economic exploitation as connected evils.
The Dr. King who believed real change required courage, sacrifice, and collective action.
Dr. King reminded us that justice is not inevitable. It is built by everyday people choosing love over fear and solidarity over silence.
As someone organizing for a more just Los Angeles and a more humane country, I return to his words often. Especially when the work feels heavy like it does right now. Especially when those in power tell us to be patient while we witness the violence against our neighbors continue daily.
Dr. King taught us that progress comes from refusing to accept the unacceptable. It is up to us to believe that our communities deserve safety, dignity, and opportunity, and to fight for it. Dr. King reminds us that our struggles are bound together.
Today is not just a day of remembrance. It is a day to recommit ourselves to the work of freedom, to each other, and to the long arc we are bending together.
With gratitude and resolve,
Angela
