Jack,

Today, we remember and honor the legacy of reverend, activist, and civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

“I just want to do God's will. And He's allowed me to go up to the mountain. And I've looked over. And I've seen the Promised Land. I may not get there with you. But I want you to know tonight, that we, as a people, will get to the promised land!” — Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

While in some ways we have come far in the years since Dr. King’s work for equality and justice, we are still far from the mountaintop. Still, we march on in hopes of a more equal and just future.

The same issues and injustices that Dr. King worked to resolve — civil rights, voter suppression, war, poverty, housing, workers’ rights, and more — are still glaring upon our country.

So on this day, I urge you not to just reflect on Dr. King’s work as history, but to hear his words as a renewed message for the ongoing movement we are part of. His message of nonviolence and compassion is as relevant today as it was during his lifetime. Let us recommit ourselves to his life’s work to bring people together to build one ‘Beloved Community’ at peace with itself.

From Dr. King’s involvement in the Albany Movement — right here in the district I live in and represent — to the March on Washington, his commitment to civil rights was rooted in his faith. And as a religious man myself, my faith guides my commitment to civil rights, equality, and justice in my community as well.

Together, we will reach the mountaintop.
