John,

Today, we honor the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and his lifelong fight to secure civil rights, dignity, and equal opportunity for all people with a day of service.

Dr. King understood that civil rights are not abstract ideals. They are lived realities. They show up in whether families feel safe in their neighborhoods, whether children have access to quality education, whether workers are treated fairly, and whether the government is accountable to the people it serves. That understanding guides my work every day as Mayor.

When we fight to make Philadelphia safer, invest in our public schools, expand access to housing, protect workers’ rights, and ensure the government delivers for every neighborhood, we are advancing the unfinished work of civil rights in this city.

Dr. King challenged us not just to speak about justice, but to build it and not just to commemorate progress but to protect it and extend it to those who have been left out for far too long.

On this Martin Luther King Jr. Day, I hope you join me in honoring his legacy through service or reflection, and recommit to building a city where civil rights, opportunity, and dignity reach every neighborhood.

— Mayor Cherelle L. Parker
