John, Today, we remember the life and work of Martin Luther King Jr.: father, minister, and civil rights pioneer. We hold near the work he did advocating for a world of equality.

King fought tirelessly for equality. He confronted racism head-on, and also fought to end poverty and promote true democratic values that would ensure all people can participate fully in society and live lives of dignity.

Dr. King’s life was cut short in an act of violence, before he was able to see the full extent of his impact. We’ve seen how fighting for equality isn’t easy. As we confront violent ICE raids and Trump’s retribution campaign, we know standing united in this fight is the only way we’ll ever see a safer, more equal, and more peaceful country.

In honor of Dr. King and for the country we want to see, let’s turn our hopes into action. Let’s commit to learning about one another, helping each other, and creating community wherever we are.

I call on all of you to remember how far we’ve come since King’s work and to remain vigilant in fostering further progress.

I know the idea of changing our world can at times seem intimidating. You don’t have to act on a large scale for it to matter. Venture out into your neighborhood and join a community organization, complete a service project, or even have a meaningful conversation with your neighbors. I promise you it makes a difference.

I believe in all of us and the future we’ll create together.
