John,

Currently, large ocean ships continue to use highly polluting fuel that dates to the 19th century. These ships use exhaust cleaning systems, better known as scrubbers, to follow clean air rules. But they still burn cheap, dirty fuel and discharge toxic waste into the water.

HB 1652/SB 5519 would require ships to use low-sulfur fuels. This is the simple, effective solution we need to keep Washington's waters, wildlife, and communities safe.

Take action now to protect Washington state waters from toxic pollution discharges. Support this solution by signing in PRO for HB 1652 before 12:30 p.m., Monday, January 19.

A simple solution to ship pollution: Require low-sulfur fuels. Support HB 1652 SB 5519

Scrubbers don’t cut pollution. They turn an air pollution problem into a water pollution problem that threatens people and nature. These systems “scrub” air pollutants out of the exhaust using massive amounts of seawater. This scrubber water is then dumped into Puget Sound. This toxic scrubber waste puts people, salmon, orcas, and our whole marine ecosystem and economy at risk.

HB 1652/SB 5519 would allow ships to switch to low-sulfur fuels without needing new or modified engines. This requirement eliminates polluting scrubber discharges and reduces air emissions. Please sign in PRO on HB 1652 by Monday, Jan. 19!

Thank you for taking action to protect our waters from ship pollution.
