At the end of the month, the initial round of COVID-19 relief expires. That means more than 10 million people could be evicted from their homes. It means the 40 million unemployed people will lose $600/week of income. The House passed a bill to deal with all of these problems, while providing support to fight the pandemic. The Senate has spent six weeks sitting on its hands, and is now pushing Social Security cuts at the last minute!
Tomorrow, Mitch McConnell is introducing the Republican proposal. As of right now, Mitt Romney’s TRUST Act―which creates a fast-tracked process to cut Social Security and Medicare without their fingerprints on it―is IN the bill. But we’re hearing that Republicans are getting cold feet. We can win this.
Social Security Works has been running billboard trucks in states whose Senators could stop Mitt & Mitch’s plan. Their voters deserve to know that these Senators are holding Social Security hostage! Chip in $7 today to keep our billboards on the road!
Ever since the lockdowns started, Republicans have been searching for a way to use the chaos to raid, defund and destroy Social Security.
First it was the “Eagle Plan,” Jared Kushner’s idea to raise the retirement age for people who lost their jobs due to the pandemic.
Then Trump became obsessed with eliminating Social Security’s dedicated funding. He stated that he would VETO any legislation that didn’t defund Social Security!
Now they’ve settled on the TRUST Act―setting up fast-track commissions to cut Social Security and Medicare!

If only Trump and McConnell had tried to stop the pandemic, rather than exploit it for right-wing policy goals. The virus isn’t going away on its own. We have to fight it.
