Dear Friend,
We are just 100 days away from the most consequential election of our lifetime. On November 3, voters will decide if we will maintain the status quo or if we will turn the page on this dark moment in American history. As LGBTQ people, we can’t afford to be complacent.
Consider these facts.
- In 2016, 6 percent of the overall voting electorate identified as LGBTQ.
- 82% of us supported pro-equality candidates.
- But unfortunately, one in five of us is not registered to vote.
Then consider these.
- In 2016, Donald Trump carried the state of Michigan by just 10,704 voters. 87,000 LGBTQ voters stayed home.
- In Pennsylvania, Trump won by a margin of just 44,292 votes out of nearly 5.9 million cast. 190,557 of us stayed home.
- Similar scenarios played out in Florida, Arizona, and North Carolina.
The numbers don’t lie. If our community is educated, engaged, and turns out in record numbers, we can make the deciding difference in the Presidential election, as well as key races that will determine control of the U.S. Senate and House — all while contributing to victories for LGBTQ and pro-equality candidates up and down the ballot.
But nothing will change if we don’t do our part.
I’m asking you today to visit www.glaad.org/action to make sure your voter registration is up-to-date, take our pledge to vote, and share with your friends and family. We have 100 days to impact the course of history and put LGBTQ equality and social justice back on the forward-moving path.
Don’t sit this one out.
