Email from Rep. Salazar Reporting from Washington, D.C. FL-27 Newsletter Vol. 119, Issue #30 Dear Friends / Estimados Amigos, This was a consequential week for our hemisphere and for the priorities that matter most to South Florida. With María Corina Machado’s visit to Washington D.C., I engaged the national media on Venezuela’s democratic future and why the fight for freedom across our region matters now more than ever. In Congress, we advanced legislation I have led to strengthen economic stability, support humanitarian relief in Haiti, and hold dictators in Nicaragua accountable, because American leadership must be clear, principled, and effective. I also continued making the case for real immigration reform, highlighting why the current approach is failing and why the Dignity Act is the serious, workable solution gaining momentum. I was also honored to participate in the America 250 Commission as we prepare to mark our nation’s 250th anniversary, a powerful reminder that America’s promise of freedom continues to inspire people around the world. From Washington, D.C., to every corner of Florida’s 27th District, it is an honor to serve you. My office is always here to help you and your family. Sincerely / Atentamente, María E. Salazar U.S. Representative (FL-27) How am I doing as your congresswoman? Delivering Results in Congress This week, Congress advanced important legislation to strengthen economic stability, support humanitarian relief, and defend freedom across our hemisphere. HELP Extension Act: The House passed an amended version of my legislation extending key trade preference programs with Haiti for three years. These programs support more than 10,000 jobs, help keep legitimate businesses operating during Haiti’s humanitarian crisis, reduce migration pressures, and promote long-term stability. You can read more about the HELP Extension Act here. IDB Capital Increase Act: The House passed my bill authorizing a $75 million U.S. investment in IDB Invest to strengthen economic growth across Latin America and the Caribbean, create new opportunities for American companies, and support poverty-reducing development projects. You can read more about the IBD act here. Nicaragua Accountability: I introduced the Restoring Sovereignty and Human Rights in Nicaragua Act of 2026 to impose targeted sanctions on the Ortega-Murillo dictatorship and hold it accountable for repression of the Catholic Church, political opponents, and the Nicaraguan people. You can read more about the bill here. At the Brookings Institution: The Dignity Act This week, I joined Marcela Escobari, senior fellow in the Global Economy and Development program at the Brookings Institution, for a fireside chat titled “Assessing U.S. Immigration Policy in a Second Trump Administration.” I was clear: the current immigration approach is not working. The system is broken, and the costs are real, hurting families, employers, and our economy by shrinking the workforce and keeping millions of people in the shadows. Abolishing ICE is not the solution either. The answer is the Dignity Act: a serious reform that restores order, allows long-term undocumented immigrants with no criminal record to earn legal status by paying a fine and following the law, without a path to citizenship and strengthens our economy by stabilizing the workforce. The Dignity Act continues to gain momentum as more members of Congress recognize it as the serious, workable solution our broken immigration system needs. Honoring America’s 250th and the Promise Ahead This week, I participated in a meeting of America 250, the congressionally mandated commission charged with planning our nation’s 250th birthday. I am honored to serve as a member of the America 250 Semiquincentennial Commission, helping shape how we commemorate this historic milestone. There was no better place to mark America’s 250th in Miami than the Freedom Tower. For so many, especially Cuban refugees like my parents, the Freedom Tower was the first place they were welcomed as free people. A warm meal. Safety. Dignity. In that simple act, they learned what America truly is. As we prepare to celebrate America’s 250th anniversary, I am proud to help share our nation’s story, celebrate her greatness, and inspire the next generation to write the next chapter of the American story. In The Media This week, I joined national and local outlets, including The New York Times, Meet the Press Now, Face the Nation, CNN, and others, to discuss immigration reform and the democratic future of Venezuela following the capture of Nicolás Maduro. I also spoke about the historic opportunity now before the Venezuelan people and the importance of sustained international leadership as the country moves toward a democratic transition. I also highlighted the visit of María Corina Machado to Washington and her critical role in channeling the will of the Venezuelan people toward free elections, institutional rebuilding, and lasting freedom. I will continue using every platform available to stand up for South Florida families and to defend our shared values of faith, freedom, and opportunity.
