Dear Friend, This week has been tough for a lot of people in our community.‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌

Dear Friend,

Right now, our communities are living in fear. People are afraid to leave their homes. Parents are afraid to send their children to school. Workers are afraid to go to their jobs. Entire communities are looking over their shoulders because of a massive and unprecedented surge of ICE agents operating in their neighborhoods. ICE agents have created a climate of terror that has no place in Minnesota, or the rest of our country.

I am beyond outraged that their unchecked violence and cruelty has led to the killing of Renee Nicole Good in South Minneapolis. Renee was a 37-year old mother, wife, writer, and poet. My heart breaks for Renee's family, who will have to forever live with the pain caused by the Trump Administration's reckless and deadly actions.

This administration's policies have not shown care for the safety of Minnesotans. Instead of protecting our communities, they are unleashing violence–terrorizing neighborhoods and now killing a civilian. For weeks, ICE’s so-called ‘Operation Metro Surge’ has spread fear, chaos, and violence across our state.

This is not law enforcement. It is state violence. Our communities deserve safety and justice. They should not be afraid of their own government. A mother of three should never become another headline. And no federal agent should kill a civilian and walk away without full accountability.

It’s time for ICE to get the hell out of Minnesota.

Conducting Oversight at the Whipple Federal Building

Image

I joined U.S. Representatives Kelly Morrison and Angie Craig in an unannounced congressional visit to the Whipple Federal Building in Fort Snelling, where we were denied our legal right to conduct oversight of the ICE processing center. It is deeply disturbing to think what ICE is hiding when they are actively denying us from fulfilling our duty. Members of Congress have a constitutional responsibility to conduct oversight where people are being detained, and the people have the right to know what is taking place in ICE facilities.

Demanding Accountability for the Murder of Renee Nicole Good by ICE

Image

I led 159 Members of Congress in demanding transparency and accountability from Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Kristi Noem and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Acting Director Todd Lyons following the fatal shooting of Renee Nicole Good by ICE agents in South Minneapolis. Our letter demands an immediate suspension of the current surge of federal officers and agents to Minneapolis, and a full, unbiased and thorough investigation into ICE’s deadly use of force against civilians.

Honoring the Life of Renee Nicole Good

I spoke in front of the U.S. Capitol to honor the life and memory of Renee Nicole Good. We will continue to fight until we achieve real justice and accountability. That starts with impeaching Kristi Noem and ensuring no federal agent can act as judge, jury, and executioner in our streets.

Announcing the Congressional Progressive Caucus's Official Position on DHS Funding
Image

As Deputy Chair of the Progressive Caucus, I was proud to announce our official position to hold ICE accountable. Our caucus members will oppose all funding for immigration enforcement in any appropriations bills until meaningful reforms are enacted to end militarized policing practices. We cannot, and we should not, continue to fund agencies that operate with impunity, that escalate violence, and that undermine the very freedoms this country claims to uphold. ICE has no place terrorizing Minneapolis or any American community, and together, we will stand united to ensure we put a check on the pattern of violence and lawlessness from this administration.
