This is Jane Fonda. At 88, I've lived through enough to recognize the warning signs.
I've seen presidents lie us into wars. I've watched administrations crack down on dissent. I've been arrested numerous times for speaking out for what’s right.
But what Trump is doing right now is different. He's operating without any constraints whatsoever.
While we can't control what Trump does, we can control who stands between him and our communities. We can elect brave leaders to Congress who will confront bullies. Leaders who will block Trump’s fossil fuel giveaways, defend our democracy, and refuse to be intimidated.
Last week, Trump told The New York Times that his "own morality" is the only thing limiting his power. Not Congress. Not the courts. Not international law. Just his personal judgment. And he's acting on it.
At every turn, it's something worse.
An ICE agent kills a U.S. citizen, and Trump lies about it. He withdraws America from the foundational global climate treaty, making us the only country on Earth refusing to cooperate on the climate crisis. He launches an illegal war to seize Venezuela's oil reserves and protect the very fossil fuel corporations that poured $1 billion into his campaign.
Look, I don't want to list every horror because you're hearing enough of that in the news.
But as I often say, only the lucky grow old – and with that luck comes responsibility. The responsibility to bear witness. To organize. To refuse to be silenced or to retreat.
What we’re seeing is authoritarianism in real time.
