A Message from Gabe:

Greetings Rhode Islanders,

Our country is going through a tumultuous time, and I wanted to share some thoughts on some notable national issues from the past week.

In Minneapolis, an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer killed Renee Nicole Good. She was a mother and a valued member of her community. This should never have happened and she should be alive.

We need a robust investigation led by both state and federal authorities. We also need accountability from Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem. Her policies at ICE have made our communities less safe, disrupted lives, and spread fear and distrust. This incident is just the latest in a long pattern of serious misconduct at the Department of Homeland Security. That’s why I joined 70 Democratic colleagues to impeach Secretary Noem because no public official is above the law.

Across our country, we are seeing a dangerous pattern of abuse of power. When leaders weaponize government to punish people who stand up to them, it puts our democracy at risk. That’s why it’s so alarming that the Justice Department opened a probe into Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell. He had previously declined to follow the President’s demands. The President's policies compromise the longstanding independence of the Federal Reserve and its decision making process. I respect and commend Chairman Powell for standing strong in the face of this political retaliation.

As the week closed, Senate Republicans once again did not vote to extend the ACA health care tax credits. This means higher costs for people who are already struggling, from small businesses to middle class families to people still too young for Medicare. And it hurts all of our health care system, making countless Rhode Islanders poorer and sicker.

Meanwhile, the President's policies are focused on running Venezuela and buying Greenland instead of fixing problems here at home. I denounced Trump's reckless policies that are exacerbating instability, violence, and suffering, while enriching the oil industry. And I introduced a bill to stop the Unites States from buying Greenland or any NATO ally.

With all of the challenges we’re facing together, please know that I remain focused on Rhode Islanders and making your lives better. I will keep fighting to lower costs, protect health care, and ensure opportunities for all.

Sincerely,

Gabe Amo
Member of Congress

Blocking the Acquisition of Greenland

CLICK HERE TO WATCH: Congressman Amo gives an update on the NO NATO for Purchase Act, which would block the President from buying Greenland.

Our leaders should be focused on fixing the health care and affordability crises his policies are inflicting on families. However, Trump is rolling out policies that are strong-arming a NATO ally into selling their land under threat of invasion. This week, I introduced the No Outsourcing of National Assets to Treaty Organizations for Purchase Act (NO NATO for Purchase Act) to stop the United States from buying Greenland or any other NATO country or territory.

Congress must make it crystal clear that not one cent of taxpayer dollars can be used to buy our NATO allies. Denmark and our NATO partners stood with us after 9/11. They deserve respect, not extortion. Our President should act like the President of the United States, not a real estate speculator playing geopolitical mob boss.

Blocking Trump's Policy Making National Parks Free on his Birthday

Ahead of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, I unveiled the Preventing Authoritarian Resource Kidnapping or PARK Act, which would block President Trump's policy making admission to national parks free on his birthday.

The National Parks should belong to all of us. Cancelling free admission on MLK Day and Juneteenth is perverse and wrong. In Congress, I will keep fighting to put service above selfishness.

Countering Trump's Policies in the Courts

The Trump administration's policies are being challenged and overturned in court. The American people are standing up against the administration, and the courts continue to side with the people.

Recent Courtroom Wins:

✅ OFFSHORE WIND CONSTRUCTION RESUMES — A federal judge blocked Trump's order and restarted construction at Revolution Wind, a project that will power 350,000 homes in Rhode Island and Connecticut.

✅ PEDIATRIC FUNDING RESTORED — A federal court reinstated $12 million in public health funding for the American Academy of Pediatrics after Trump cancelled their funding for speaking out in defense of evidence-based practices and children's health.

This week, Trump initially cut nearly $2 billion in mental health and addiction funding — including for Rhode Island.

I fought back right away by demanding the cuts be reversed alongside 100 of my colleagues. We won and Trump reversed his policies cutting funding and hurting vulnerable people. In Congress, I will keep fighting to save lives.

Condemning the Chaos in Venezuela

Trump has not released a plan to deal with the chaos his policies created in Venezuela.

This week, I joined Democrats from the House Foreign Affairs Committee to call for answers and to condemn Trump's policies, which are rushing us into reckless foreign wars.
