Democrat,
This week, we lost a beloved leader, Governor Richard Codey.
Governor Codey’s legacy in New Jersey touches every corner of the state and his impact will continue for years to come. He was our longest serving lawmaker, and in that time, there was never an idle year. Whether he was an assemblyman, state senator, state senate president, or governor, Codey’s convictions delivered results.
We live healthier lives as a result of his ban on smoking indoors and his fight for better access to mental health care. We can enjoy cheering on our favorite football teams, may it be the Jets or the Giants, at Metlife because of his dealmaking.
He mentored generations of leaders throughout our state, underscoring honesty, standing by your beliefs, and fighting as hard for others as you do for your family. We will all miss Governor Codey.
One of his mentees was our soon to be sworn-in governor, Mikie Sherrill. We are all looking forward to her inauguration on Tuesday, January 20.
Before that day comes, we will celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King Day. In a time of great turmoil in our country, the practices of Dr. King of civil disobedience and caring for our neighbors must be utilized. If you’re able, take the time on Monday to give back to your community through an act of service. Make your voice heard and stand up for those who are voiceless. We must recognize our collective power and believe a better future is possible if we fight for it.
— Chairman LeRoy J. Jones, Jr.

Get ICE Out of New Jersey
Last week, ICE agents in Minneapolis, sent by the Trump administration, shot and killed Renee Good in broad daylight and proceeded to terrorize the city at schools and throughout communities.
ICE is not keeping communities safe as they claim; they are inciting violence and chaos. Trump’s immigration policies are cruel, divisive, and do nothing to actually address the issue.
This week, ICE agents came to New Jersey, conducting a raid in Morristown, arresting a high school student and leaving a six year old girl by herself after taking her father. The town was not notified these agents were coming, instead they came into Morristown and took our neighbors away.
New Jersey is stronger because of our diversity and vast immigrant communities. We won’t back down from standing up for our neighbors and condemning these cruel raids.
We don’t want ICE in our state. As leaders in Minnesota have said, leave us alone.
