In 2018 Coloradans passed amendments Y and Z which enshrined in the Colorado constitution a redistricting commission tasked with drawing maps independent of partisan interference. 

It is a model system for how states across the nation *should* redraw their Congressional maps following each census. 

Unfortunately, Trump has taken the nation in the polar opposite direction launching hyper-partisan gerrymanders in red states to ensure that the GOP is able to steal enough seats to prevent a loss in the 2026 midterms. Right now their plan is working:

Coloradans tried to play fair and set an example but MAGA has no interest in playing by the rules. 

Trump launched this redistricting strategy under the full expectation that Democrats would not push back.

California and Virginia proved him wrong but more states must follow if we hope to save the blue wave that was supposed to be forming prior to MAGA’s gerrymandering effort. 

This is why Coloradans are choosing to fight fire with fire and nuke their independent redistricting committee via the ballot initiative that Colorado Draws the Line is working to pass. The initiative will make Colorado bluer and erase as many as 3-4 red seats (including Boebert’s). 

They started this fight and now we are going to finish it. Maybe a time will come after MAGA has been defeated where we can revisit independent redistricting but until then we’ve no choice but to fight fire with fire.
