Dear MoveOn member,
ICE and federal Customs and Border Protection agents have been militarizing our cities and terrorizing our communities—ripping people from their cars, pointing their guns at protesters and observers, and kidnapping our neighbors off the street. This month, we witnessed the extrajudicial killing of Renee Nicole Good at the hands of an unidentified masked federal ICE agent. We know this lawless and tragic act was not an isolated incident but part of a pattern of abuse and violence designed and upheld by the Trump administration.
These agencies are operating with virtually no oversight or accountability, with Vice President JD Vance arguing that federal immigration agents are “protected by absolute immunity.”1 The same day, Vance went on Fox News and said that immigration enforcement and deportation numbers will be ramped up as agents start “going door to door.”2
Despite ICE’s monstrous budget, Congress is debating right now on proposals to expand funding for ICE’s violence in our communities. With more money, there will likely be no limit to the violence that ICE and CBP agents inflict on our communities. Send a letter to your members of Congress demanding they vote NO on any bill that increases funding for ICE or CBP and require immediate oversight and accountability for these agencies.
ICE now has a budget larger than that of most of the world’s militaries, after Congress approved over $170 billion for immigration and border enforcement last July.3 At least $30 billion of that total budget is being used to triple ICE’s workforce and bring the total number of agents to 30,000, while $45 billion will be used to build new detention centers, potentially doubling the agency’s capacity to detain people.4
This bloated funding has already fueled the Trump administration’s dream of ICE as a lethal domestic military force into reality. Now is our chance to weigh in to stop this rogue agency from getting another dime. Tell Congress: No more money for ICE. No more ICE deaths. ICE out of our communities!
Thanks for all you do.
