Friend,
We are almost 100 days out from November 3rd and are in the home stretch of this fight that we started in 2017. I am so proud of the momentum we are continuing to build, and I am honored to do this work alongside so many amazing people.
We have to acknowledge, July has been rough in Georgia. We lost Congressman John Lewis and C.T. Vivian - some of Georgia’s great civil rights leaders. I’ve spent time this week reflecting on the magnitude of their legacy and their commitment to justice. We have a lot of work to do to address inequality and racial justice, but in the George Floyd protests, I saw so many communities around the 7th district come together and stand up against injustice, and this sense of common purpose left me deeply hopeful for the future. At the same time we are struggling as a community because of the disastrous mismanagement of the coronavirus crisis. Cases are rising and our Governor is attempting to sue the City of Atlanta over its ordinance requiring citizens to wear masks! Meanwhile, schools across the state are facing the difficult decision to re-open or to start their fall semester digitally. As the mom of an 8-year-old, I understand the lack of options we face: we want our children in school, but we want our teachers, neighbors and our own family to be safe. We struggle to educate our children at home and provide childcare.
But as we go forward, we have to stay focused. We are in desperate need of leadership in this country, and we have three months to go before the most important election of our lifetimes. We’re building a movement for lasting change: the kind of change that will bring competence and reasoned decision-making to the current crisis, access to affordable health care for all Georgians, end Georgia’s status as the state with the highest rate of maternal mortality in the country, address long-standing racial inequities, and build an economy that works for everyone.
We will change our district, the state, and the country -- and we will do it together.
In hope and faith,
Carolyn
