Here’s the deal, John.

Earlier this week, incumbent Rep. Lacy Clay sent thousands of voters a mailer intentionally spreading lies & misinformation about Cori. Here’s the bottom line: he’s scared, and his gross campaign tactics just show how desperate he is.

Clay is throwing everything he has at Cori, but we’re here to set the record straight:

TRUTH: Cori Bush is a respected ordained pastor, which is a lifetime qualification. In fact, from 2013 to 2015 she pastored a church that she founded herself. Since then, she’s taken her faith-based work from the church directly into the community and onto the streets.

TRUTH: Cori Bush is a working class, single mother who gave up a full-time job as a registered nurse in order to be a full-time candidate for Congress. The Federal Election Commission (FEC) has rules in place to ensure regular people can afford to run for Congress, not just millionaires. Cori is fully compliant with FEC rules and transparent with her team, supporters, and community in all aspects of her campaign.

TRUTH: Like many St. Louisans, Cori Bush has gone from paycheck to paycheck in low wage jobs. Cori Bush’s tax burden was more than she could afford as a working class, single mother who was also paying off student loans for her nursing degree. Cori has since diligently paid off all of her outstanding tax debts in full. Her nursing license was swiftly reinstated, and Cori continued to work as a nurse, receiving international recognition for her professionalism and commitment to her patients.

TRUTH: Cori Bush’s FEC filings from past election cycles are in full compliance with FEC guidelines, as are her current 2020 campaign filings.

TRUTH: Cori Bush does not accept any corporate donations and relies on small dollar contributions from regular everyday people in St. Louis and across the nation who believe in Cori’s message and the nationwide progressive movement that she represents. Thousands of St. Louisans have donated to Bush’s campaigns.

TRUTH: 99% of Cori’s contributions come from individual donors, the vast majority of which are under $200. Cori Bush has been supported by local and national grassroots organizations who do not accept any corporate contributions. These organizations’ values are in line with Cori’s and the voters across Missouri’s First and the country who support, contribute to, and volunteer for her campaign.

TRUTH: Cori Bush’s experiences as a working class Black woman and single-mother are shared broadly by people in her community, who have been underserved by decades of failed leadership. She has always been upfront and transparent about her struggles living paycheck to paycheck, and has even been unhoused at times in her life. That Lacy Clay views this as a disqualification for public office demonstrates how severely out of touch he is with the community he is supposed to serve and represent.

TRUTH: Professionals have licenses temporarily suspended by the state every year for unpaid state taxes, unrelated to their professionalism or quality of work. Cori Bush’s career as a registered nurse is marked by compassion, professionalism, and service. The suspension of her nursing license by the State of Missouri is exclusively related to her inability, as a working-class single-mother, to fully pay her tax burden at times in the past and is not a reflection of her ability or record as a medical professional.

TRUTH: Cori Bush’s campaigns against Rep. Lacy Clay have always been issue-driven. As a primary challenger, she has rightfully sought to highlight differences in their views and records without ever making personal attacks or disparaging his character. Lacy Clay claims he is proud to run on his record, but consistently fails to highlight what that record includes, instead choosing to malign the character of a working-class Black woman and single-mother, whose struggles as a resident of Clay’s district are a direct result of his failure to deliver the real change that St. Louisans want, need, and deserve.

TRUTH: Cori Bush voted for Barack Obama in both the 2008 Primary and General Elections.

TRUTH: Cori Bush, compelled by the pressing needs of her community, has sought public office in the past and continues to do so today, continuously building on the foundations laid both by her organizing work and her prior campaigns.

TRUTH: Cori Bush has been a leader in her community as a nurse, a pastor, and a civil rights activist fighting for justice for Black lives. She has organized countless protests and actions and has made real change in her community by doing so. She has continued to do so even as a full-time candidate for public office.

TRUTH: Lacy Clay has been one of the most outspoken critics of the Squad. We are glad he’s finally recognizing the influence and power they’ve gained by taking on the Democratic establishment head-on. We need more of that, and that’s exactly what Cori Bush’s campaign and this movement are about.

We are so close to making history and giving regular everyday St. Louisans the representation we deserve. We are on the verge of victory, but we need you to help us get there. Will you contribute today so we can counter Clay’s disgusting attacks and continue to get Cori’s message out to every single voter we can before our August 4th primary?
