Dear John,
This is our first dispatch of 2026, and it comes at a difficult moment for our communities.
On January 7, a Trump-deployed ICE agent shot and killed Renee Nicole Good in Minneapolis, blocks from where George Floyd was murdered in 2020. She was 37 years old, a mother to a 6-year-old son who is now without her. We mourn her loss and every individual harmed by the Trump administration’s cruel and reckless immigration enforcement policies.

We know that thoughts and prayers are never enough. That is why Sister District Advocacy Network partners with and supports grassroots organizations building power year-round to fight for our communities.
In 2025 alone, through Sister District Advocacy Network’s Bridges program, partners delivered concrete wins for our immigrant neighbors:
- Arizona Center for Empowerment helped defeat 12 anti-immigrant bills, including one that would have paid police $2,500 per detained undocumented individual, and organized 18 actions demanding fair and humane immigration laws.
- Rural Arizona Engagement launched a hotline and resource network for communities impacted by immigration policies, coordinated rapid response to ICE activity in rural borderlands, and hosted bilingual Know Your Rights trainings in English and Spanish.
This is why grassroots power is so important, and each month we’ll keep sharing how we’re building it — and how you can take action with us.

Believe it or not, John, the road to the midterms is already here. While national headlines are focused on taking back Congress, the most decisive battlegrounds for real progress remain state legislatures, where durable power is built and policies that affect our daily lives are decided.
That is why Sister District is going all in across nine key states to organize, build power, and elect incredible Democrats.

➡️ Candidate Spotlight: Dante Pittman
|
This year, we’re proud to once again endorse Sister District alum Dante Pittman in his bid for re-election in North Carolina.
In 2024, Dante’s razor-thin victory broke the NC GOP’s toxic supermajority, and now we’re supporting his campaign to protect his seat in what’s shaping up to be another close race.
Re-electing Dante Pittman is key to sustaining Governor Josh Stein’s veto power, blocking the GOP’s attacks on schools, healthcare, and reproductive freedom, and defending North Carolina’s future — and he’s counting on our help to win.
If you’re all in to help re-elect Sister District alum Dante Pittman and protect our progress in North Carolina, pitch now!

Last year, we helped elect the largest Democratic majority in Virginia in decades.
With the Virginia legislature back in session, lawmakers are wasting no time and have already advanced four critical constitutional amendments in their first week:
- Protect reproductive freedom — safeguarding access to contraception, abortion, IVF, and pregnancy-related care
- Restore voting rights — automatically returning the right to vote for returning citizens
- Protect marriage equality — removing Virginia’s outdated ban on same-sex marriage
- Fighting back against Trump’s gerrymandering — allowing a one-time redraw so Virginians have fair representation

Sister District South Bay is kicking off the year by bringing people together and building the relationships that power our work.
At a recent It Starts with States gathering, local activists met one another, connected with the South Bay chapter, and dug into how they can support state-level power building together all year long.
|
That’s all for now, John. We hope you enjoyed reading this newsletter. We’re grateful to have you as part of our collective fight to win permanent progressive power in the states for our communities.
Thank you, and enjoy your weekend!
