A message from Council Leader, Councillor Neghat Khan
This week, we launched a series of stakeholder sessions with partners across Nottingham to help create a new vision that will guide the development and growth of the city in the years ahead. It will help determine how transport and digital infrastructure can connect people to opportunities and support major new developments bringing jobs and growth. Nottingham has a proud cultural and sporting heritage with a history of innovation. What we want now is your insight on how Nottingham should grow, where we should focus our energy, and what our priorities must be to unlock the city’s full potential. This isn’t just a Nottingham City Council vision, it’s vision for all of us. Your perspective is vital in helping us build a Nottingham Vision that reflects our ambition and is shared across the whole city. You can share your views here.
This week also marked an important milestone for Nottingham. At Full Council, we announced that we have paid off 64% of our general fund debt in just six years, a significant achievement that shows the real progress being made as we lead Nottingham forward. Reducing our debt means we can invest more in what matters most to our residents. We’ll be sharing more about what this progress means in the coming weeks.
It’s also great to see the city coming alive again as Nottingham Light Night returns this month, bringing creativity, culture and excitement to our streets after dark. Read on for more on all of these stories and the latest news from across the city.

Nottingham City Council has achieved a significant milestone by reducing its debt by nearly £535 million over the past six years - from £827 million to £292 million.
This progress puts the Council in a stronger financial position, with more flexibility to invest in frontline services and the services that matter most to local people.
This sustained progress reflects years of careful financial management and puts the Council in a much stronger position to plan ahead, protect vital services and invest in the frontline services that matter most to local people. It marks an important step in strengthening the Council’s long-term financial stability and resilience.
Nottingham Light Night returns on Friday 6 and Saturday 7 February, illuminating the city after dark with more than 30 immersive and interactive light-based installations, performances, and activities.
Many of this year’s commissioned works explore the theme of home – from installations conceived or created in Nottingham to pieces that reflect what home means to us all, including:
-
Parallels at Old Market Square
-
The Cat That Slept For A Thousand Years at Sneinton Market Square
-
Mycelium Network at the Robin Hood Statue
More commissioned works, including installations by Nottingham-based artists at Nottingham Castle, St Mary’s Church, and Sneinton Market Avenues, will be announced soon in the full Light Night programme.
We’re investing in more visible, frontline roles to help keep Nottingham city centre safe, welcoming and vibrant.
Working with our partners, we’re strengthening the Safer City Partnership presence in the city centre and recruiting four new Neighbourhood Safety Officers to tackle anti-social behaviour and provide reassurance.
We’re continuing to make the city centre a place people feel safe to live, work and visit.

More than 4,000 people have started using a ground-breaking new travel app for residents and commuters in Nottingham.
Ride, a partnership between Nottingham and Derby city councils, was officially launched in December and is available for people to download free in their app stores.
Ride enables users to plan, book, pay and ride any journey in the wider Nottingham and Derby areas, across multiple different types of public transport - all in one handy place.
It gives people point-to-point route planning and allows them to buy tickets for all parts of their journey. Another excellent feature is the live map which shows every bus moving in real-time, so easy to know whether you have time to finish your coffee or dash for the stop!
The app has been built using money secured from the Government's Future Transport Zones programme. Nottingham and Derby councils joined forces to bid for the grant, which encourages projects that promote sustainable travel and behaviour change.
