John—
The murder of Renee Good by an ICE agent in Minneapolis was devastating and the aftermath has been gut-wrenching.
I am proud that, as always, Run for Something alumni are leading when it matters most: Minnesota State Sen. Zaynab Mohamed, an immigrant herself, was at the scene within minutes to support neighbors. Minneapolis City Councilmember Jason Chavez, whose parents are immigrants from Mexico, represents the district with the largest Latiné population in the city. He has organized food drives and kept community members informed about what can be done.
Across the country, our alumni—so many of whom are immigrants or from immigrant families—are fighting back against ICE. In Missouri, Rep. Ray Reed is introducing legislation to ban masked agents. Jersey City Councilmember-elect Jake Ephros is preparing to do the same when he takes office and Aurora City Councilmember Alli Jackson is also pushing her council to act. Jazz Hampton may have lost his race for Minneapolis mayor, but he’s using the platform he built to keep his neighbors informed about ICE activity in real time.
John, good local leadership has never mattered more. RFS candidates are the leaders we need right now. Your support helps more people like them run and win.
Will you start a monthly gift right now to elect more good leaders who care about and show up for their communities?

Minnesota State Rep. Esther Agbaje, a daughter of Nigerian immigrants who lives in Minneapolis, spoke to the New York Times about the effect ICE is having in her community:
“People are scared. People are not going to school. People are not going to work. People are not going to the grocery store. I don’t think that that’s how people should be living.”
Esther and folks like her get it because they’ve lived the struggle, they’ve walked these streets, they’ve been in these communities. They’re not playing politics; they’re protecting our neighbors.
When federal forces descend with guns blazing, it’s leaders with years of connection, trust, and lived experience who keep communities fed, comfortable, and safe.
We can’t recruit and support those leaders without you. Your gift fuels the training, coaching, and support that gets more people like this elected to essential, hands-on leadership roles. Please start a monthly gift now.

No matter how you choose to support these candidates, please know that I’m incredibly grateful that you’re a part of this fight.
