Friend,
Late Tuesday night, the Trump administration abruptly terminated more than 2,000 federal grants administered by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), wiping out nearly $2 billion in funding for front-line mental health services, substance use disorder treatment, overdose prevention, suicide prevention, and recovery programs nationwide.
This sudden move created unnecessary chaos and uncertainty for providers and the people they serve across the country. Instead of focusing on providing lifesaving care, service providers were scrambling to figure out what happened and feared they would be forced to shut their doors immediately.
After intense pushback from service providers, DPA, our allies, and members of Congress, the Trump administration announced it would reverse these grant terminations.
As soon as we got word of these cuts, we did everything we could to fight back. We immediately organized with service providers, our partners, and lawmakers across the country to urge members of Congress to reverse course--and that collective pressure made a difference.
While we are relieved to see this reversal, it should not have taken massive public outcry to protect funding for lifesaving services. The consequences for Americans struggling with addiction or mental health issues would have been devastating: closed health clinics, fewer treatment beds, longer waitlists, missed medication doses, and reduced access to lifesaving tools like naloxone. And a majority of the funding for these grants was already appropriated by Congress, raising serious legal concerns about their termination. We will continue to monitor the situation to ensure every grant is fully restored and services resume without interruption.
Unfortunately, this administration has a pattern of announcing extreme actions, reversing course quickly, and then quietly moving forward in ways that attract less public attention. As a result, we must remain vigilant: this funding is still not secure.
With Congress making its final decisions about federal funding, we must keep the pressure up right now. Urge your members of Congress to fully fund these critical programs and stand against any further illegal cuts by the Trump administration.
While the administration is claiming fentanyl and public safety as top priorities, they are cutting Medicaid and dismantling the very solutions that reduce overdose deaths and stabilize communities—while using drugs as an excuse to escalate military conflicts with other countries. Americans want investments in health, safety, and stability at home—not endless, costly conflicts abroad and devastating cuts to basic public health services.
We can’t let this happen again. With your support, we will keep up the pressure on Congress to fully fund the mental health, addiction treatment, and overdose prevention services Americans rely on—and stop further attempts to dismantle lifesaving care.
