Email from Los Angeles Police Protective League Daily News & Updates   Law Enforcement News LAPD detectives search for hit-and-run driver who crashed into parked food truck and injured woman Detectives are seeking help from the public as they work to identify and locate the hit-and-run driver who crashed into a parked food truck in the Fairfax District in October last year before running from the scene on foot. In a news release, Los Angeles Police Department officers said that the crash happened on Pico Boulevard near Hayworth Avenue back on Oct. 4, 2025, when the driver of a white Nissan Pathfinder crashed into a parked food truck. "The impact caused one of the occupants of the food truck to be ejected onto the roadway," police said. The victim, only identified as a 50-year-old woman, suffered injuries that required hospitalization. Instead of stopping, the driver fled from the area on foot. She hasn't been identified or located since. As with all hit-and-run crashes resulting in injury in Los Angeles, a standing reward of up to $25,000 has been offered for anyone with information that leads to the identification, arrest and conviction of the suspect through the Hit-and-Run Reward Program Trust Fund. CBS 2 Man in custody after a woman says she and her dog were forced into a car in Hollywood The Los Angeles Police Department Wednesday investigated after a woman said she and her dog were forced into a car in the Hollywood area. The woman told police she was walking her dog at around 5 a.m. on Argyle Avenue on Hollywood Boulevard when a man grabbed her and her dog and forced them into his car. Both the woman and the dog were able to escape a short while later, she claimed. The LAPD said the woman said the man’s car was a black Chevy truck. When officers tracked down and detained the man, they learned there was no evidence of a kidnapping and released the man. The LAPD investigators believed the woman got into the vehicle on her own. NBC 4 Mother desperate for answers amid search for SoCal teen missing since Halloween A Southern California mother is pleading for help to find her teenage daughter who has been missing since Halloween. Jade Duran was last seen leaving her father's home in Panorama City on Oct. 31 and hasn't been heard from since. Her mother, Erica Pinilla, has been handing out flyers and retracing her daughter's steps. "Not knowing whether or not she's OK is very hard," Pinilla said. Pinilla said Jade, who was staying with her father, snuck out around 11:30 p.m. to go to a Halloween party her parents forbid her from attending. Within the first week of her disappearance, Pinilla said Jade's phone was dumped, sold and ended up out of state. Pinilla says the group that invited her to the party were adults who Jade met while taking the public bus to Kennedy High School in Orange County. She found Jade with that same group at Schweitzer Park in Anaheim the day before she went missing. Pinilla returned to the park Wednesday - a day that should have been filled with celebration since it's Jade's 15th birthday. The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children is helping Pinilla in the search. A case manager, who asked not to be identified, joined the family at the park as the search for Jade continues. ABC 7 CHP intercepts Cadillac after armed kidnapping report in Los Angeles Two people were taken into custody early Thursday after California Highway Patrol officers helped intercept an apparent armed kidnapping in Los Angeles. The report involved a white Cadillac SUV traveling southbound on the 405 Freeway in the San Fernando Valley around 2 a.m., according to the CHP. The initial call indicated that several armed men forced another man into the Cadillac at gunpoint. It was unclear where the suspects abducted the victim. Officers eventually located the vehicle and stopped it at a gas station on the 16500 block of Victory Boulevard in the Lake Balboa neighborhood. The CHP confirmed that two people were detained at the scene. Authorities have not released a possible motive for the kidnapping or said whether the victim was injured. The Los Angeles Police Department is involved in the investigation, according to a CHP spokesperson. KTLA 5 Police investigating alleged sexual assault on UCLA campus Police at the University of California, Los Angeles, are investigating a sexual assault that allegedly occurred on campus. The UCLA Police Department stated in a campus community alert that around 12 a.m. on Monday, officers received a report of a sexual assault in the 600 block of Landfair Avenue. “The victim reported they were unable to provide consent at the time,” UCLA PD’s statement said, without going into detail about the nature of the alleged incident. There was also no information on a potential victim. University police also said that the alleged suspect is “not affiliated” with UCLA. No description was immediately available. In a statement sent to UCLA’s student newspaper, the Daily Bruin, a UCLA Police Department official said the incident “appears to be isolated.” Anyone with information is asked to call 310-825-1491. KTLA 5 ‘We cleaned off blood in the driveway’: Reward offered in murder of L.A. County father Homicide investigators with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department are asking for the public’s help in identifying the persons responsible for the death of a 24-year-old man in Bellflower 17 years ago. Vincent Bejar, a resident of Norwalk, was shot to death on Sept. 1, 2008, in the 15100 block of Eucalyptus Avenue in the City of Bellflower, according to a statement from L.A. County Supervisor Janice Hahn. The 24-year-old, who had a 2-year-old son, was reportedly walking on the sidewalk around 1:30 p.m. when a white four-door sedan stopped adjacent to his location. “The front passenger exited the vehicle while pointing a handgun at Mr. Bejar,” the release noted. “Mr. Bejar ran from the location and was fired upon several times by the armed suspect.” Medical personnel, presumably with the L.A. County Fire Department, responded to the scene and found that the 24-year-old had been struck in the torso by gunfire. He was rushed by ambulance to Long Beach Memorial Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. “It was a holiday. He was walking down a residential street. A car came up. It was several shots,” Bejar’s mother, Cynthia Bejar, told the San Gabriel Valley Tribune in 2023. KTLA 5 California mother who was drunk when daughter, 2, drowned convicted of murder A 45-year-old woman from Northern California is facing 15 years to life in prison after she was convicted in the drowning death of her 2-year-old daughter, authorities announced late last week. The incident occurred on Sept. 12 around 3:30 p.m. at a home in the 4500 block of Fireside Drive in Turlock, a city about 15 miles from Modesto, according to a news release from the Stanislaus County District Attorney’s Office. Officers with the Turlock Police Department responded to the home after Kelle Anne Brassart called 911 to report that her daughter, Danielle Pires, was floating in the pool. At the residence, officers pulled the child’s “lifeless body” out of the water. Despite administering life-saving measures, the toddler was declared deceased. Upon contact with Brassart, officers observed that she was displaying signs of impairment,” prosecutors said. “Detectives immediately began an investigation into the death.” Investigators discovered empty and full bottles of liquor hidden throughout the home and learned that the girl’s father told Brassart that she couldn’t drink while caring for their daughter, who needed to be supervised at all times. Home security cameras captured Danielle’s death and showed the little girl unattended in the backyard for an extended period before getting into the pool and drowning. KTLA 5 Texas officer shot, killed by suspect who then died by suicide after standoff The Texas Rangers are investigating the death of Copperas Cove Police Officer Elijah Garretson, who was killed in an officer-involved shooting, KCEN reported. Authorities have not released details about what led to the shooting, but Texas Department of Public Safety Sgt. Bryan Washko confirmed that the suspect died by suicide following an extended negotiation with law enforcement. Garretson, 27, joined the Copperas Cove Police Department in June. He earned the Academic Award for graduating with the highest GPA in the class, the department stated in a social media post. While still in the academy, Garretson was recognized for rendering aid to a fellow cadet during a medical emergency. The Copperas Cove Police Department acknowledged the loss in a public statement, asking for privacy and patience as the department and Garretson’s family grieve. “As we begin to navigate this incredibly difficult time, we ask for understanding and patience… Out of respect for all those affected and the ongoing investigation, no further information is being released at this time,” the statement read. PoliceOne Public Safety News K-9s detect human remains in vacant building destroyed in massive North Hills fire A building fire is still smoldering in North Hills one day after it first started. Now, crews are searching for possible human remains in the rubble. Two K-9s at the scene detected human remains in the vacant building that burned, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department. Both K-9s reportedly marked a positive hit in the same area, about 20 feet into the building. "The dog actually made a hit, indicating that there is perhaps a body. What we did is systematically ran another K-9, and it actually hit in the same location. It's probable, but that means that could just simply be blood. That could be a bone fragment. That doesn't mean there's a human body underneath there," LAFD Capt. Erik Scott said. "Because there's so much rubble, we cannot pull it all up to get to the source of it. We're systematically pulling out the debris, combing through it." LAFD brought in heavy machinery on Wednesday to pull apart the building and allow firefighters access to the area identified by the K-9s. So far, a body has not been found. ABC 7 L.A. roads battered by rain, potholes worsen commutes Recent record rains have left Los Angeles streets riddled with potholes, creating hazardous and costly conditions for drivers and mounting financial pressure on the city. Since Christmas Eve, crews have repaired more than 3,800 potholes and are working seven days a week, but with over 14 inches of rain falling since October, new craters continue to form as water weakens asphalt and the soil beneath it. Drivers have taken to social media to share damage stories, while at least 284 pothole-related vehicle damage claims have already been filed this rainy season. The city can be liable for repairs if it knew or should have known about roadway hazards, contributing to steadily rising street-related litigation costs. Although potholes are a recurring problem after major storms and crews are planning future resurfacing projects, the current deluge has once again turned L.A.’s roads into a minefield for commuters. Los Angeles Times Local Government News LA City Council votes to repeal ban on playing catch on residential streets and parks The Los Angeles City Council on Tuesday unanimously voted to repeal a law that could subject people to fines or jail time for playing catch or other sports at parks or on public and residential streets. All 14 council members present at the meeting voted to draft an ordinance that will repeal the law, Los Angeles Municipal Code Section 56.16, which is titled "Streets-Sidewalks-Playing Ball or Games of Sport." The lone absence from the meeting, Councilman Bob Blumenfield, introduced the motion to repeal in August last year. At the time, he described the regulation as an "uncommonly silly law." The current law, which city officials referred to a outdated and no longer appropriate for a modern city, mandates that "no person shall play ball or any game of sport with a ball or football or throw, cast, shoot or discharge any stone, pellet, bullet, arrow or any other missile, in, over, across, along or upon any street or sidewalk or in any public park, except on those portions of said part set apart for such purposes." People were subject to up to a $1,000 fine or six months of jail time if they were charged with violating the law.
