Legislative Update – ICE Response and Know Your Rights Training
Dear Neighbors,
I wish I could start my first update of 2026 by highlighting Minnesota’s new Paid Leave program, the laws that went into effect on January 1st, or the legislation I’m hoping to bring forward this year to help our district and support the clean energy economy.
I’ll have time to talk about all those things in future updates, but now I need to address the unconstitutional actions of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in Minnesota, the Trump administration, and the senseless killing of Renee Good [ [link removed] ] by an ICE agent last week.
This tragedy, one of many we’ve had to endure as Minnesotans in the last 12 months, comes as President Trump has clearly put Minnesota in the crosshairs, using our immigrant neighbors as scapegoats and leaving entire communities targeted, devastated, and fearful.
Renee should be alive today, spending time with her children, family, and friends. I’m thankful that in our district, I was joined by dozens of neighbors last Friday for a moment of silence honoring Renee. The rush of some in the Trump Administration to propagandize her, a woman they didn’t know, and blame her for her own death is absolutely unacceptable.

Accountability and Transparency
Minnesotans deserve a thorough, independent investigation we can trust, but the federal government is preventing Minnesota’s law enforcement officers from doing their jobs.
It’s common practice for agencies in a jurisdiction to share resources in the aftermath of such a high-profile and sensitive case, but Trump’s FBI has blocked the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, made up of career law enforcement specialists, from accessing crucial evidence and information.
This will not get us closer to the truth and justice, far from it. I hope my colleagues across the aisle join us in calling for transparency and accountability in the investigation of Renee’s death and other potential constitutional and legal overreaches.
President Trump’s stated goal of surging federal agents into Minnesota was to make us safer, but we’ve seen the opposite instead.
In the last week, federal agents have:
* Killed a mom in broad daylight and then denied her medical care [ [link removed] ].
* Entered school property [ [link removed] ] and tackled students, broke car windows, used chemical agents, and handcuffed staff.
* Detained a pastor [ [link removed] ] after threatening and waving a gun at him.
* Injured countless residents, like the two Target employees and U.S. citizens who were surrounded, grabbed, and then later released without charges [ [link removed] ] in a different parking lot.
* Denied our U.S. Representatives [ [link removed] ], including Rep. Kelly Morrison, access to ICE facilities so they could perform congressional oversight.
And that’s an abbreviated list. I’d urge you all to listen to the story of my friend Patty O’Keefe [ [link removed] ], who ICE agents illegally detained before releasing her without charges.

Know Your Rights Training
Despite all the darkness, I have been inspired by all those, in our district and across the state, who have been standing up and using their First Amendment right to protest ICE’s actions and speak out for justice.
That’s why I’m incredibly glad to collaborate with Hennepin County Commissioner Heather Edelson and HC Adult Representation Services to answer community questions about the increased federal immigration and customs enforcement in Minnesota.
This Know Your Rights Virtual Q&A is an opportunity to get clear, reliable information, understand your rights, and hear directly from legal experts in a respectful, community-centered space. The event is virtual and will be held on Wednesday, January 21, from 7:00-8:00 pm. Sign up and submit questions here. [ [link removed] ]

The Trump Administration wants us to be scared into silence so they can continue to push their false narratives about the actions of ICE in our state and paint our neighbors as dangerous. But we know better.
Together, we must continue to protest peacefully for what is right, take care of one another, and fight for a more just future for everyone who calls Minnesota home.
