Gold bars

Gold Bar Scams are Targeting Older Minnesotans

Commerce is seeing an increase in scams targeting older Minnesotans. In these schemes, victims are pressured to wire large sums of money—often six figures or more—to purchase gold bars. Scammers then direct victims to turn the gold over to a “courier.” The gold is stolen, and victims may be placed in physical danger.

These scams are connected to *romance scams, government imposter scams, and fake investment opportunities*. Because the gold is purchased in the consumer’s name from legitimate businesses, the story can seem convincing—but it is a scam.

*Red flags include:* urgency, secrecy, large wire requests, and any demand involving gold bars. *Real government agencies will NEVER ask you to buy or deliver gold.*

If you or someone you know is a victim, we recommend engaging local law enforcement. If you’re concerned about a senior or vulnerable adult, help is available.

Flooding

Flood Insurance Can’t Wait—Protect Your Home Before the Snow Melts

Flooding can happen anywhere — not just near rivers and lakes. Consider getting flood insurance before the snow melts and spring flooding begins. Standard homeowners insurance typically does not cover flood damage, which means you could be left paying out of pocket after a disaster. Review your coverage and chat with your agent if you're unsure.

Kick Off the New Year with a Financial Health Check

The start of a new year is a great time to pause and take a fresh look at your finances. A quick check-in now can help you stay on track and avoid surprises later.

Review your spending so small costs don’t add up, and make sure your money choices still match your goals. Set a few short- and long-term goals for the year, like saving more, paying down high-interest debt, or increasing retirement contributions—especially if your employer offers a match. Automating savings and bill payments can also make things easier.

Don’t forget to protect yourself. Check your credit report regularly, freeze your credit if you suspect fraud, and learn how to spot common scams.
