January marks a decisive moment for Americans United for Life (AUL) as a new year of legislative and legal engagement begins. With lawmakers returning to Washington and policy agendas coming into focus, AUL is working diligently behind the scenes to fortify pro-life protections at not only the federal but also state levels to ensure that the dignity of every human life remains at the center of public policy.

As federal healthcare negotiations continue, our January efforts have centered on defending Hyde provisions to protect Americans tax dollars. Hyde embodies the fundamental principle that taxpayers should not be compelled to subsidize elective abortion or plans that cover abortion, and its life-saving impact cannot be overstated. Since its enactment, Hyde has protected an estimated 2.64 million lives, a legacy that underscores its enduring moral and public value.

We therefore strongly condemn President Trump’s recent statement that he is “flexible on Hyde.” This position signals a dangerous willingness to retreat from a long-standing, bipartisan safeguard that respects the deeply held convictions of millions of Americans.

Any erosion of the Hyde is simply unacceptable. We will continue to hold the President and Congress accountable and will not tolerate any effort to weaken or eliminate this essential protection for life. And, that is why we have delivered a letter directly to President Trump on your behalf.

This same month, the pro-life movement gathers in a powerful way for the National March for Life. Held each January in Washington, D.C., the March marks the 53rd anniversary of Roe v. Wade and serves as a visible reminder that millions of Americans remain committed to protecting unborn children. I hope to see you there!

The Center for Client Safety (CCS) received a credible report from a sidewalk counselor raising concerns about patient abandonment and negligence at an Illinois abortion facility. CCS promptly filed a detailed, evidence-based complaint with the medical board. State regulators have now opened a formal investigation, a major development in one of the nation’s most permissive abortion states. CCS will continue monitoring the case and pursuing accountability. This outcome underscores the vital role of trusted pro-life partners and sidewalk counselors in bringing credible concerns forward.

CCS also previously reported that findings at a Nebraska abortion facility formerly operated by LeRoy Carhart led to a legislative oversight hearing led by Senator Rick Holdcroft. That progress is continuing. The relevant regulatory board has now placed CCS’s complaints, along with new intelligence, on upcoming meeting agendas. This marks a strong validation of CCS’s investigative work and an important step toward accountability where violations have gone unchecked for years.

President Trump told House members that they “have to be a little flexible on Hyde” when it comes to health care bills. But there is no room for flexibility when it comes to using taxpayer dollars to end the lives of preborn children.
