Dear Friend,

Two weeks into the new year and so much has happened. Early last week, an ICE agent shot and killed Renee Good in Minneapolis. She was a mother of three. ICE is abusing our community—masked agents are targeting our neighbors and acting without regard for the law.

I’ve heard from many of you who are concerned about rising healthcare costs and ICE in our community. Thank you for speaking up. I hope that you are taking care and continuing to share your story.

I know there is a lot going on—my office is here to serve you. Pease call my San Antonio office at (210) 348-8216 or my Washington office at (202) 225-3236 office if we can be helpful.

ICE Protests in San Antonio

This past weekend, San Antonians gathered to push back against ICE in our community. Under the Trump Administration, ICE has become a rogue agency that must be disbanded. They are hurting our community, separating families and leaving a dark stain on our history.

Thank you to all those who are using your voice and speaking out. In Congress, I am calling for a transparent investigation into the murder of Renee Good and holding ICE accountable for their reprehensible actions.

Celebrating the Arrival of T-7A Red Hawk

This past weekend San Antonio celebrated the arrival of the U.S. Air Force’s next-generation trainer aircraft, the T-7A Red Hawk, at Joint Base San Antonio-Randolph. I am glad to see our future Air Force pilots in Military City, USA receive the best training.

Five Years Since January 6th Attack

Earlier this year, the House Democrats held a special hearing on the five-year anniversary of the January 6, 2021—an attempted coup and attack on our democracy.

Today, the fight against actions that undermine democracy at home and abroad continue. The American people, and the world, must know that democracy is worth fighting for.

Reintroduction of War Powers Resolution

Last month, the House voted on my War Powers Resolution that would have ended the President’s unauthorized war against Venezuela.

It failed by only two votes. Congressman Jim McGovern (MA-03), Thomas Massie (KY-04), and I reintroduced this bipartisan resolution last week to block further U.S. hostilities within or against Venezuela.

No one is above the law and the Trump Administration cannot go to war without the consent of Congress and the American people.

Preventing Wars Abroad

The administration has been ramping up efforts in using military force abroad. Instead of focusing on issues like lowering healthcare costs, the Administration is straining our relationship with our allies and threatening military action in Mexico, Greenland, and others.

Last week, I introduced legislation alongside Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi (IL-08) to block Trump’s plans to “run Venezuela and use American tax dollars to subsidize oil companies. Yesterday, I also introduced the No Authorized War in Mexico Act, legislation that would block taxpayer funding from being used to go to war with Mexico.

NPR — "Rep. Joaquin Castro on Venezuela strikes, Trump’s Claim Maduro ‘Captured’"

“I've said all along that the people of Venezuela, just like the people of the United States and our country, should be the ones to determine who their next leader is. But there's a real chance here that what appears to be a good thing, getting a guy who's acted like a dictator out of there, it could turn into a bad thing. I hope that's not the case, but again, there's a power vacuum here. This is a case of regime change.”

“You're probably going to have an element in Venezuela, obviously, that's very upset about the United States or any country coming in there and doing it like this. And history has shown that there often and within nations, especially once the United States, if we're not going to have any role at all, then when there's no - there are no forces keeping peace, they usually start to fight with each other, and I think that's what you could see here.”

Zeteo News with Mehdi Hasan — “Dem Congressman: [ICE] Should Be Disbanded”

“They have turned [ICE] into a completely rogue—not just an immigration enforcement organization—a rogue organization. We still cannot get confirmation about who all these new hires are, for example. I’ve seen reporting that they hired bounty hunters to go after people. I just saw this 287(g) agreement with one of the local governments in Texas that literally puts a bounty on the number of people they arrest.”
