News From The Week Of July 20 – July 24, 2020
Friend,
This week we saw what true religious freedom looks like. On Wednesday, the House of Representatives passed the NO BAN Act to end President Trump’s cruel and un-American Muslim ban. That ban is a blatant violation of church-state separation that not only breaks families apart, but also breaks our Constitution’s central promise of religious freedom.
The fight continues for passage of the NO BAN Act in the Senate, but we should all be proud that this week, religious privilege lost and religious freedom won.
On another key issue, we await the Senate Republicans’ version of the new coronavirus relief package, which is reported to divert billions of public school money to private religious schools, on top of the billions already secured in previous relief packages.
In other news, as we set ourselves up to secure more victories in the years and even decades to come, AU remains focused on expanding our movement to include the new and more diverse than ever generation of leaders.
That’s why I was proud to keynote the Secular Students Alliance’s “Envisioning A Better World” virtual conference on Wednesday and share my thoughts on how we can move forward on protecting church-state separation in the aftermath of the crises of 2020. I also enjoyed weaving into my speech how interconnected our cause is and has always been with the fight for racial equality and a broader vision of freedom and equality for all.
I hope you can take some time this weekend to watch my keynote address here: [link removed]
Thanks for all you have done, and continue to do, to support Americans United and the principle of church-state separation. We could not do our work without you.
In solidarity,
